Taali: a biographical series on ShreeGauri Sawant

Image
Taali series, 6 episode biopic on Jio Cinema is bound to invoke so many emotions and make us contemplate on so many things. I have been following Shree Gauri Sawantji on Social Media since a long time now, but little did I know about her struggles in the past and her huge contribution to the transgender community and humanity as a whole. This series is truly inspiring and thought provoking. When i first came to know about the series, eventhough I love and admire Sushmita for innumerable reasons, I wasn't very happy about the casting. I did feel, why not cast Gauriji herself or someone from the trans community for the lead role, why do we need a cisgender person to play it?? Now on watching the series, I understood why... Sushmita Sen is so brilliant and has delivered such an impactful performance that it is very obvious how much this cause really means to her. We can feel her (Gauriji's) emotions n turmoils, every time she appears on the screen. The scene just af

Family Man Season 2

I loved Family Man season 2 on Amazon Prime videos. It is truly amazing! I thought it was even better than season one. Season one had left us waiting for season 2 ,which took more than a year and half to release but the wait was surely worth it! I was blown away by Samantha's acting. She is just too good. She hardly had any dialogues but she has done all the talking through her expressions and body language. I doubt anyone else could have carried out Raji's role so well. Manoj Bajpai as Srikant is so realistic and relatable as any of us. He is such a brilliant actor, be it his comic timings, serious scenes, emotions he conveys through his eyes and face or portraying of day to day frustrations at his IT job or at home. You end up admiring him every single minute. The kids who played Dhriti and Atharva have also done a wonderful job. While Atharva is cutest at his emotional blackmailing game and new found love for hypnosis. Dhriti is the classic teen who wants to grow up t

Bombay Begums on Netflix

Image
It is a 6 part long webseries which was released on Women's Day and revolves around five seemingly empowered women who belong to different stratas, different ages and are facing all sorta different struggles which most women can relate to. The intention of the makers seems really great but, the efforts fall short somewhere. Many things were repetitive and unnecessary. It could not create an impact and connect the way it could have! Its Pooja Bhatt's comeback as an actor after almost 21 years and she has done a fair job as Rani: a powerful woman, who started from scratch and has achieved a lot in life except for acceptance from her own family. Shahana and Plabita were perhaps the best performers and did a great job keeping it realistic. Shahana Goswami as Fatima: the fiesty ambitious woman who can crack the best of deals with her quickwit and presence of mind but has been dealing with a lot of internal struggle, self prejudices and dissatisfaction in her personal life. Plab

Serious Men

Serious Men: movie on Netflix:  Based on the book by Manu Joseph, this movie directed by Sudhir Mishra and starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui will make you contemplate n reflect over a lot of things. Ayyan Mani played by Nawaz, is a smart and confident man belonging to the lower caste n working as a PA to Arvind Acharya (Nassar): a Brahmin Scientist. I mention the caste because the entire movie revolves around this societal hierarchy. Ayyan has come a long way, is educated and doing okay but his roots and the atrocities that his ancestors suffered keep haunting him all the time. Every now and then he is reminded of his under-privileged status and humiliated by his boss over trivial things. He is indeed frustrated and struggling to make ends meet and provide a good life to his wife and son. But he is also clever, opinionated and street smart. He is highly determined to go to any extremes to secure the future of his only son Adi, beautifully played by Aakshath Das. Adi is an innocent

Kehne ko Humsafar hain (3 seasons- ALT Balaji)

Kehne ko Humsafar hain: Finally the last 9 episodes of season three were released on 1st July 2020. I loved the series! I loved watching all three seasons. It's quite surprising since, I am not very fond of Ekta Kapoor shows. I saw that people have wrote all sort of things about the show calling it immoral, all about lust and that it is giving a wrong message to society.  Well, I somehow didn't find any wrong message. The story is quite realistic, modern and it does question certain aspects of love, relationship and marriage. It is not forcing its views since it does highlight the consequences too.  KKHH has lived up to it's title, till the season finale. As the name suggests, it's about having that 'so called partner in your journey' (kehne ko humsafar) with whom, you can really be yourself and be happy without giving an official name to the relationship. It shows both the perspectives: how certain decisions might impact others who are involved (especially fami

Illegal Season 1 (webseries on Voot)

The supposedly courtroom drama web series, has more drama in the lives of all its characters than in the actual court room. 😱 The series starts with an interesting premise and does grab your attention to some extent.  But there is too much going on in it at all times. 😥  Be it the ghost from the past, personal conflicts, failed relationships, sexual assault, hallucinations out of guilt, paranoia, political games, murders, plight of a death row prisoner the list goes on n on. The director has tried to cramp it all in a 10 episode (approx 25 mins each) series. 🤷🏻‍♀️  Neha Sharma has given her best as Niharika Singh 👌🏻👌🏻 and must be her no. 1 role by far. Dipak Tijori's character needed to have more depth, especially for his comeback. Akshay Oberoi is improving. Much much better than his performance in 'Its not that simple'. Kubbra Sait is quite good as Meher Salam, Piyush Mishra's character as JJ- a cunning, crooked, powerful lawyer was highly irritating and he di

Asur- Season 1 (A webseries on Voot)

After many of my friends recommended this series, I finally saw it about a month back. It is a mythological psychological thriller with Arshad Warsi and Barun Sobti in its lead roles. Arshad Warsi as DJ and Barun as Nikhil Nair were both wonderful.  This is Arshad's debut in web series and I wish he does it more often. He is perfect for the role of this dynamic, super intelligent, sensitive yet egoistic and adamant senior CBI official. The series is quite good, though I dont think its the 'Best' hindi web series as being said by few but a really good one for sure! Each episode begins with a flashback and many things unfold as the story progresses.  All actors have performed brilliantly and it keeps u engaged throughout. The actresses have very little screen time. Riddhi Dogra had nothing much to do in season 1 but, maybe she will, in season 2. Anupriya Goenka was good.  Two of the actors need special mention, Vishesh Bansal who has played the role of young Shubh: an autisti
